30 Day Music Challenge – Day 7

By | July 8, 2017

Today’s prompt is “A Song To Drive To”.   As I don’t drive, for me,  it’s a song to cycle to.

I quite surprised myself with my choice of one, it’s a group that I don’t listen to regularly and only have the one song on my phone but, it was the one that stood out for me.

It’s also been really interesting watching TOTP repeated on BBC4 every week, we watch it and discover new tunes and, if you watch with subtitles on, it’s very funny seeing the “ban diddley qua qua” (for example) of Prince Charming being subtitled.

So, today’s choice is Radio GaGa by Queen and not just because of the driving bit at the start, it’s the perfect song to cycle/drive along with a gentle breeze whistling around your cycle helmet windows.

The lyrics stand out for me too:

“I’d sit alone and watch your light

My only friend through teenage nights

And everything I had to know

I heard it on my radio
You gave them all those old time stars

Through wars of worlds invaded by Mars

You made ’em laugh, you made ’em cry

You made us feel like we could fly.

Radio.
So don’t become some background noise

A backdrop for the girls and boys

Who just don’t know or just don’t care

And just complain when you’re not there
You had your time, you had the power

You’ve yet to have your finest hour

Radio, Radio….
We watch the shows, we watch the stars

On videos for hours and hours

We hardly need to use our ears

How music changes through the years.
Let’s hope you never leave old friend

Like all good things on you we depend

So stick around ’cause we might miss you

When we grow tired of all this visual
You had your time, you had the power

You’ve yet to have your finest hour

Radio, Radio.”

That sums up my Sunday evening as a teenager, taping the best bits of the Top 40 and trying not to include the DJ’s introduction and comments in between the songs.  Good times.

What would your driving/cycling song be?

Ah what a great song you chose!

For me, it would be anything by Tracy Chapman, but in the interests of keeping it relevant, ‘Fast Car!’

oh yes, great choice. I like to have something on I can sing along to when there is no-one else in the car, the louder the better. I don’t think I could choose a favourite.
