Two part instruction – Weds 8th June 2016

By | June 8, 2016

Another achievement from D has crept up on us, slowly but surely.  It’s nice to suddenly think “whoah, that’s a possibility” and then – like part of the saying goes – “smile cos it’s happened”.

Previously with D, we’d found that she couldn’t process two-part instructions, for example “can you go into the kitchen and fetch me a spoon?”, it wouldn’t work, she’d either go in there and forget why she was there or get extremely flustered.

Just lately though, she’s been a little star.

For example, when our grocery shopping comes, she has her task of filling up the crisps bucket (my old blog wasn’t called “bluecrisps” for nothing) and – if she’s amenable – helping to put the freezer stuff away.  Fortunately our freezer is quite happily running from an extension cable at the moment.  When she does do this latter task, she’s extremely careful and mirrors where I put things, as opposed to T or Hubbie, who chuck it all in and hope the lid closes.

And today.  It was a bit of a panic as I couldn’t remember where I’d put her PE kit in last week’s leccy fun, games and house being turned upside down by engineers.  It wasn’t where it normally was, or should be.

Until I remembered and asked D if she would go to that place (T’s PE kit basket, yep, I know….I think I must have thought it would be somewhere “safe!”) and then put it in her PE bag.  Which she did.

She most certainly couldn’t have done that a few months ago.  Okay, it’s not a biggie if you don’t have an SN child, I remember having so much more responsibility at her age (sometimes too much) but, it’s a definite achievement for D, following that two-part instruction.

It’s something that made me smile today.

It’s no understatement to say that I’m finding this last couple of weeks tough, our leccy issue is no nearer sorted and there’s other “stuff” burbling too, it can all make for an emotional J.  On top of all of that, because I’m potentially having an op mid July under general anaesthetic (nervous, had a local, never a general anaesthetic), I wanted to stop taking any prescribed medications before that.  I stopped my anti-dep tablets last August and was left with tablets to help me sleep as my brain just doesn’t relax terribly easily.  So…because I don’t want to mix those with pain killers in July, I’ve stopped taking them.  It’s not easy and going from (relatively) uninterrupted sleep to not settling til past midnight and then not really sleeping isn’t fun, but I’m hoping that if our leccy issue gets sorted my sleep will naturally improve too.  Herbal over-the-counter remedies don’t seem to work for me, my brain fires up, telling me “well, you know they’re not going to work, so why bother?” Such is life.

Which is why little smile moments over a gym bag are so lovely ATM.

Absolutely brilliant post! Following a 2 part instruction is a huge leap – well done D.

I can’t believe they still haven’t sorted the electric, that is shocking!

Well done to D on being able to follow a two-part instruction – that’s brilliant and such a wonderful milestone. Hope you get your electrics sorted out soon and wishing you all the best for your op in mid-July.
