World Autism Awareness Day #WAAD – Sat 2nd April 2016

By | April 2, 2016

It’s World Autism Awareness day and those who read my blogs regularly will know how much I want to raise acceptance of autism, as well as awareness.

I posted the words below to my Facebook page today (link here) – please hop over and give my AutismMumma page a like, if you get a chance – and, sorry if you’ve already read this but my sentiments don’t change:

“World Autism Awareness Day and yes, plenty of people are aware of autism but what parents/carers/individuals really want is more acceptance, acceptance of something others can’t necessarily see.

Unlike a physical disability, you wouldn’t necessarily know T or D have autism until something happened and they became overloaded with sensory/emotional issues.

When that happens it isn’t a tantrum, it’s not because they can’t have a particular toy or magazine, it’s because the environment around them (sights, sounds, smells) has all become a little bit too much and they don’t know how to cope with it all.

My autistic children are fast growing up and they’ll become adults with autism. The fact that society might not understand or tolerate them, is a worry.

I’ll speak up for understanding and acceptance forever, for them, for everyone.”
