Progress – Fri 18th March 2016

Sometimes an achievement takes you by the hair and shouts “look at me, look at what’s just happened!” (D writing her name for the first time by herself, for example) or it creeps up slowly and gradually and is just as welcome.

This week has seen two such achievements.

Some background.  Ever since D was a baby, she’s had to have me as first point of contact.  There was never any question of anyone other than me going into her room to see her at night or pushing her buggy – anyone else (even Hubbie) would get screamed at.  It’s something we accepted and it was part of our everyday life.

The buggy situation continued until she was about 8, she stopped using a buggy completely (was for her anxiety issues/her own safety) two years ago and she accepted Hubbie going in to see her (and take her breakfast in) but it always had to be me that tucked her in at night.

D has melatonin to help her settle at night and even if this had been administered and I was out at a meeting in the evening, she’d still wait and hold out for me to get back, tuck her in and then…like a switch has flicked, she’d be asleep (after having a little moan that I was back late!).

This week has seen a couple of firsts:

I was at a meeting last Monday evening, got back and she was asleep.  I don’t remember being later than I’d said but she’d settled and was quite happily quietly snoring away.

And…

She let Hubbie take her to school this morning! Quite an achievement both from the change of routine aspect and the “need for it to be me” part.  She did have a little moan about it when we collected her but it had not dominated her day as it would have done previously.

A result for us all.

And Hubbie will collect her by himself one day next week as I won’t be back in time.

It’s little tiny steps towards her not being so reliant on me, I wouldn’t say independence, D has zero road awareness and does still get very worried about strangers but it’s a definite achievement here.

From little acorns and all that…

That’s amazing! Very well done to her! It must feel really good for you too – it must always be a worry that she relies on you that much, in case something happens which prevents you from being there.

That is fantastic and clearly huge steps for her which will mean you potentially have that little more time. Really great to read xx

That is brilliant, I know how wonderful it felt when Monkey would accept others doing things for him and how much of a help it was for me. Onwards and upwards x

That’s great news. Piglet won’t go to sleep on his own either, and it means that if I have to work late or go out in the evening (the latter is quite rare!) he waits up until I get home. #SSAmazingAchievements
