Patience Patients – Mon 15th Feb 2016
By Jeannette | February 15, 2016
D has been a star today, an absolute star.
It always tickles me slightly when she’ll pack her bag of goodies if we go out and it’s never a light bag, today’s consisted of:
Three books
Her iPad
Bunny and two other soft cuddly toys
Drink of water, snacks, lunch (these added by me).
But, that bag served its purpose and did just the job today.
I had a hospital appointment which turned into a most-of-the-day affair, what with a 40 minute or so wait over our appointment time, then the appointment itself, then about 1.5 hour wait in the blood test room and then the performance of trying to get blood out of my unwilling veins.
She took it all in her stride, occasionally having a little moan but those books, her iPad and snacks got her through. She sat next to me and we listened as people arrived in the blood test area, exclaimed loud disappointment at the amount of people waiting and then they’d huff and puff whilst they deliberated whether to stay or not.
Our girl – who isn’t the most patient at times – decided that I shouldn’t “run about and panic” when I have my blood taken, because it would “look silly because you’re (I’m) an adult”. Which must have brought memories back for D and how she bolts and screams during injections.
On the way out, we went past the X-ray department and she remembered when she had one for her face after falling off her bike. She was calm but very clear she didn’t want one again sometime soon.
And then we went into a busy town centre, full of shoppers and – where we’d normally go – Costa was closed for a refit (grr) so, another change.
Her little bag was very useful today, well done D for (what might have seemed previously like over) packing it, it got her through some lengthy waiting around today, I might have to make sure any future appointments are during school time as she is bound to remember today and it will be funny little things too, maybe how she didn’t like some of the strange smells in the hospital. It was originally booked for term time but they brought it forward.
A wait for results now, but a “tick” off the list and a day that went far more smoothly (although lengthier) than I could have hoped.

That sounds like it went really well and her packed bag was just what she needed! My daughter and I have had a few long waits in hospitals and she always refuses to take anything with her to keep her amused, which means she moans the whole time!

I’m so glad all this waiting went so well. Hospital waiting times can be so unpredictable. I can imagine D with her bag, I really hope it is pink with sparkles. It definitely did the job today.
Thanks for linking up with Small Steps Amazing Achievements :0)
