New Tastes – Tues 15th Dec 2015
By Jeannette | December 15, 2015
Once again, D has amazed me today. I walked home with our children from school with such a big smile on my face, ’twas fabulous.
Why? Well it was the Christmas lunch at school today. As in previous years, I’d sent in her usual packed lunch because that was how it was. D had no interest in trying out all the goodies.
Well today she did! She was sat next to one of the PE teachers and tried some lunch. She excitedly said to me on the way home that she would like “turkey, with sausage, with peas, with roast potatoes and with gravy for Christmas lunch”. Fan-blooming-tastic!
We’ve always agreed with regard to the children that, due to their many and varied sensory issues, we’ll tell them all about the nutritional values of food and how yummy they are but not force them to try things – because autism plays a part and any attempts to “force” or do the “you’re not getting anything else until you’ve eaten this” just does not work. They have to decide for themselves and in their own time. Whenever that may be.
Today seemed to be D’s.
I’ve also been smiling because sometimes we “mix it up” a little bit and don’t necessarily have turkey on Christmas Day. For the last few years we haven’t. But this year we are! We’d already put the food order in and so….3/4 of us will be having the same food for Christmas lunch which will be just wonderful. It would be the metaphorical icing on the cake if T tried some turkey too, but we’re patient (we have to be) and hopefully, maybe someday, that day will come too.
I did say to D how kind her teacher was to share a bit of her lunch and asked if D had then shared her packed lunch in reciprocation. “No, it was my lunch!” came the reply! Very typically D, she does like her food (and now some new taste experiences).
D had another happy moment too. She was smiling broadly as she came down the stairs at the end of the day and then changed to a “Ooh Mumma, I’ve hurt my finger”. Her cracker from lunch had had a joke nail in it (the ones that look like you’ve put a nail through) and she just couldn’t wait to play her little trick! Then later she played it on her dad. Cheeky monkey!

I love this, I hope she ate turkey with you on Christmas day. Ethan actually did really well with his Christmas dinner, I won’t mention Little E ;0) x
