Cocoon for now – Sun 15th Nov 2015

We haven’t gone out today, we haven’t needed to.

Like many people, following Friday’s atrocities in Paris, I have a desire to cosset my family, to keep them near me.

In addition, I haven’t wanted them to see newspapers with their headlines and pictures, showing just how much carnage a few humans can chose to inflict on others. Why did they do it? Only they will know that.

T was asking me about what had happened in Paris and why, it’s hard to explain in a child’s terms why someone would chose to deliberately end someone else’s life.  He already knows about different beliefs and that most of the conflict around the world is over differing religious ideals.

D is learning in fairly simplistic terms about WW2 in school, I’ve kept her away from newspapers and news channels because, if she did understand what had happened, she’d more than likely refuse to go out, whether to school or elsewhere.

I don’t want that to happen, for her to add to the considerable anxieties that can pile themselves on her every time we step beyond that garden gate.

Whoever plotted and planned this wants people to be scared, to not go to public places, or use the underground or head to concerts/football games etc.

That can’t happen.  For the sake of the victims and their families.

They weren’t weak, whoever planned the attacks were.

We (a collective, civilised world “we”) have to stay strong, united and, at the same time, vigilant – even if our insides tell us otherwise.

I have felt very much the same, re sharing. My eldest stayed up to watch the news, but he’s almost 18 so an understanding of the world is somewhat there. The other 2 have had limited access, little A being totally kept away because he wouldn’t understand it at all xx

Thanks, it’s a fine line between telling our children to be careful and not scaring them silly isn’t it x
