This week’s #WOTW and #R2BC – Tightrope
By Jeannette | October 8, 2015
Usually on a Thursday I’m looking back pondering our week and thinking of how to sum it up, whilst also thinking “yippee! Nearly Friday!”.
This week it’s more a feeling of “where has that week gone? I’ve still got so much to do before 3pm tomorrow”, when I head off for the school run.
It’s felt as if I’ve been on a tightrope all week, trying to get over it quickly (metaphorically) and also trying not to fall off (I have such a fear of heights that you’d sooner get me to the moon than on one in real life).
So, that’s my word. Tightrope. The happy/sad faces are interchangeable, both T and D have been in tears today, seperately and for very differing reasons.
We need some R2BC now, before I (metaphorically) fall off and some reasoning behind my WOTW:
1. A job offer
I attended an assessment centre for a seasonal job last week and received an offer this week. Unfortunately I’m going to have to decline. The hours are rota-ed and aren’t do-able with school and the fact that SN childcare costs a fortunate. It’s 20p above minimum wage too on a zero hours contract so there’s no financial scope for Hubbie to finish earlier/start later.
It’s a shame but it made me positive for the future. I passed their psychological tests and the assessment, I just need to keep looking.
2. Vintage?
We had to have the company we have our Home Emergency Cover with out this week as our boiler keeps cutting out. It turns out the circuit board (aka brains of the thing) is wearing out.
The chappie who came out told me it’s a common problem and that our 10 year old boiler is “vintage”. Considering we replaced the (still working) 30 year old one when we moved in, I’d say our 10 year old still had stacks of life left in it. Not so apparently. According to them it’s “financially uneconomical” to repair under our cover.
Which sounds like a load of p**p because they will repair it for an additional charge, which isn’t cheap or give us a trade-in paltry amount against a new one.
It makes me so cross that these companies seem to have a set “script” and they don’t seem to be able to listen to any reasonable discussion. Despite the fact we have a “vintage” boiler, the engineer said it was in really good condition – apart from the circuit board obviously.
So, the positive is that it’s repairable, but it would be good to know warranty etc before we agree.
3. Decluttering
I love a good declutter and what with a new bed for T arriving tomorrow, it’s a good opportunity to have a clear out.
The downside is that both he and D don’t like all the upheaval that a sort-out, dismantling and assembling of furniture and “keep or charity shop or recycle or hippo bag” brings so I’m rushing around like a whirlwind after the morning school run, creating mess and noise and then tidying it all up again to head off to school and then starting again the next day. And repeat.
The positive is that it’s getting done, but it would be nice to have that “flop” on the sofa I keep promising myself.
4. Our little songbird
D had a singing audition for a part in a school play today. Our girl, who couldn’t join in with assemblies or performances in mainstream, sang along to a rocky version of “Let It Go” and told me she got a huge cheer when she finished! Well done D!
5. Healthy (ish)
Hubbie has one of those really annoying dry coughs at the moment but, apart from that, we’re all tickety-boo. Hubbie’s dad is continuing to recover well after his hospital stay, which is a relief.
Now we just need that pesky boiler sorted before this dreadful winter that the tabloids are forecasting gets stuck in.
How’s your week been?

Oh gosh no wonder your word of the week is tightrope you seem to be having quite the week. Fingers crossed your boiler is all sorted soon especially with the weather turning cooler. Well done D! Xx

Good news about the job offer but zero hours contracts are not so good. At least you have experience for your next interview. Boiler engineers annoy me too. Ours is apparently not up to code now either (because they keep changing the standards), I’m sure it’s just a ploy to make money!

Oh yes indeedy, I’d agree with that!

What a mixed week..
That is such a shame about the job….
Well done D with her singing! You must be so proud!
I hope the boiler is sorted soon x

Our boiler was fitted two years ago and every time we get it serviced they tell us about something else that has made it ‘not up to current regulations’! A shame about the job but yes, also something positive to focus on too.

Agreed, it was good for my confidence to be offered the job, even if it wasn’t feasible 🙂

A busy week, quite a mixed bag, too. ‘Vintage’ is young these days, isn’t it?! Well done on the job offer, a shame it can’t work for you, but a confidence boost nonetheless x Thanks for sharing with #WotW

Makes me glad I’m in housing association and they deal with the boiler! Sounds amazing that D sang and so glad the house changes are getting there slowly
