Attention To Detail – Tues 15th Sept 2015

It’s a funny old post tonight, I’m attempting to detract away from the timetable (or lack of) issue and this means that I gabble away about anything and everything on the way to school, to get D there smiling.

Sometimes it works,  sometimes D will point out little things that I’d just take for granted, sometimes it’s a typo, she is really getting eagle-eyed, our D.

There was a time when D couldn’t read, the environment in mainstream meant that she was “too shocked” to attempt to learn, she was also learning by memorising the words as opposed to phonetically – which caused even more issues for D, on top of the anxieties that she was facing on a day to day basis.   It was difficult not to make comparisons between D’s levels and the girl from her class I’d look after after school, similarly with T being waaaay ahead of his peers in virtually every topic.

The one thing we found helped (and I recommend it every chance I get) was a vTech storio, it brought her along in leaps and bounds, far more than I could have ever have envisaged.

And now … she reads and reads and reads. She has a nose at my text messages if she gets a chance and loves looking at the adverts on the sides of buses.  Occasionally she’ll find a mistake in one of her books (either a typo or some simple punctuation) and she’s always amazed that it’s been allowed to be published like that.  

It’s wonderful just how far she’s come, in the right environment.   I’m not altogether sure how much further she will go on an intellectual level but to see her read – and enjoy it – is fantastic.

   
 
D’s attention to detail makes us both laugh after school too.  We have about a 5 minute wait before T’s school coach pulls in and that’s usually a case of distracting D if there’s plenty of people around and attempting to keep dry if it’s raining (epic fail for me today, I managed twice to make sure T and D had their coats without thinking of mine and got soaked … twice).

  
The dairy milk bar in the picture above made D smile today, she decided that the Oreo illustration looked very much like Pac Man (she’s seen adverts for Pac Man on the sides of buses) and it does really doesn’t it?

The bar was destined for T’s tummy, whilst D had her flake, but it’s just another example of her attention to detail and that enthusiasm which we love so much about her.
