Attention To Detail – Tues 15th Sept 2015
By Jeannette | September 15, 2015
It’s a funny old post tonight, I’m attempting to detract away from the timetable (or lack of) issue and this means that I gabble away about anything and everything on the way to school, to get D there smiling.
Sometimes it works, sometimes D will point out little things that I’d just take for granted, sometimes it’s a typo, she is really getting eagle-eyed, our D.
There was a time when D couldn’t read, the environment in mainstream meant that she was “too shocked” to attempt to learn, she was also learning by memorising the words as opposed to phonetically – which caused even more issues for D, on top of the anxieties that she was facing on a day to day basis. It was difficult not to make comparisons between D’s levels and the girl from her class I’d look after after school, similarly with T being waaaay ahead of his peers in virtually every topic.
The one thing we found helped (and I recommend it every chance I get) was a vTech storio, it brought her along in leaps and bounds, far more than I could have ever have envisaged.
And now … she reads and reads and reads. She has a nose at my text messages if she gets a chance and loves looking at the adverts on the sides of buses. Occasionally she’ll find a mistake in one of her books (either a typo or some simple punctuation) and she’s always amazed that it’s been allowed to be published like that.
It’s wonderful just how far she’s come, in the right environment. I’m not altogether sure how much further she will go on an intellectual level but to see her read – and enjoy it – is fantastic.
D’s attention to detail makes us both laugh after school too. We have about a 5 minute wait before T’s school coach pulls in and that’s usually a case of distracting D if there’s plenty of people around and attempting to keep dry if it’s raining (epic fail for me today, I managed twice to make sure T and D had their coats without thinking of mine and got soaked … twice).
The dairy milk bar in the picture above made D smile today, she decided that the Oreo illustration looked very much like Pac Man (she’s seen adverts for Pac Man on the sides of buses) and it does really doesn’t it?
The bar was destined for T’s tummy, whilst D had her flake, but it’s just another example of her attention to detail and that enthusiasm which we love so much about her.

What a wonderful eye and what a wonderful way to distract her. A proof reader in the making I wonder? #SSAmazingAchievements

So great when kids find the way that works for them & develop a love of reading. I’m with D – I’m always looking for the typos! & it does look like Pac Man! #SSAmazingAchievements

Thanks, she has come along so much in the last few years with her reading, the tiniest typos are very quickly spotted, bless her!

So pleased D loves reading so much! I can see what she means by Pac Man!

Thanks and yes, I didn’t really see the Pac Man element until she pointed it out 🙂

I honestly believe a love of reading makes such a difference to a person’s life, so it’s wonderful that D loves books so much. I’m a massive reader, so am keeping my fingers crossed that my daughter learns to read and inherits my love of books. And she’s right; that oreo does look like pacman, although oreos are… well, not the nicest biscuit in the world. I will be checking out that VTech storio that you recommend… need some ideas for Christmas anyway. #SSAmazingAchievements

Thank you, I absolutely loved reading anything and everything as a child and I’m so pleased that D gets pleasure (and calming) from it.
She’s never without a book, which is great.
Definitely have a route around for a Storio, they were so beneficial for D (and the SN child we lent it too afterwards).

I love that D can read. It always amazing me how you learn to read. Something that is, hopefully, second nature as an adult you forget that you had to learn ho to read. It’s a fantastic life skill too and can open up so much. I really hope reading is in our future too. She would make a fantastic proof reader lol x
