A (Potential) Solution – Tues 16th June 2015

By | June 16, 2015

I’m grateful this evening that we have a home-school diary that is actually read by her teacher.

We had instances in previous years when it wasn’t, any verbal suggestions were ignored and we just had the feeling that we weren’t able to express opinions or concerns – or rather we could, but they would be brushed over.  Thankfully that particular teacher has left the school.

Anyway, after yesterday’s anxiety overspill, with Sports Day again being her first thought when she woke up, I requested in D’s diary that someone verbally take her through what she’d be doing, just to put her mind at rest.

Which they did.  Phew and she now knows which races she’s participating in in the afternoon.

But that’s not the “solution” of the title.  Nope.  D did some forward-thinking, which I’ve very proud of and she just might have the solution to another one of her anxieties.

It’s sports-related, again.

Every Monday and Tuesday, the first thing her class does is get changed for either PE or gym.     This causes a few anxieties for D because:

1) as she’s the only girl in a class of 10, she has to change away from the others and because of the other needs of the children she’s on her own, so she’s never sure if everyone is ready before her

And

2)  it’s a “catch 22” situation because if we set off to get there as the doors open, we’re passing the mainstream school that we have to walk past at it’s busiest time (which brings out D’s stranger and people-being-too-close anxiety) and then walking into her SN school with the bulk of the school bus occupants (busy) and she’s therefore extremely stressed

Or

We walk past when everything has calmed down (still getting there on time) but she walks into a classroom of boys getting changed – which embarrasses her.

Anyway, we had our walk this morning to school and D suggested that she wear her PE clothes under her clothes so that any changing is minimal.  What a great idea from her!  I have mentioned that there might be times when she feels a bit warm with a double layer on, but she seemed happy with that and very pleased with the praise for thinking ahead with a (potential) solution.  Our #SSAmazingAchievement for this week.

The rest will get easier, I hope.

And just when you think all is okay, there’s been a not-brilliant hair wash and those sports day anxieties have resurfaced.  Not as severe as they have been, but they’re still there, bubbling away.  Somehow Thursday (for that is when it is) can’t come quick enough.

What a brilliant idea from D! Not surprised you’re very proud of her for working out a solution. Hope the sports day isn’t too stressful in the end!

It was, one that we regularly use if we’re running late and PE is first lesson, bless her 🙂

She loves sports day build-up wise but that old competitiveness always rears its head on the day x
