Give A Little Whistle #SSAmazingAchievements

By | April 29, 2015

For the last couple of years, D has been having an injection once a month.  It’s in the worst place possible (b***om) and whilst we slaver the intended prod area with numbing cream, it acts as a kind of placebo but doesn’t alter the fact that it hurts and will draw a bit of blood.

I have to admit that the first time was horrendous, D flailed about like a giant, distressed fish and she had to be lifted up and held down on a table by three of us in the hospital, whilst screaming.  Hubbie didn’t need to ask how it went when we came out as he’d heard through the doors.

There have been times when she’s been literally chased around a room, because once the solution is mixed, there’s a 2 minute window before it starts to solidify.   Times when I’ve tried to hold her arms still and give her a massive cuddle whilst the nurse is dashing around trying to get the needle in, D suddenly moves and one of us is hit (not intentionally).

And then there’s the build up, the “I don’t want an injection so I’m not having cream on”, the subsequent slooooooow walk to school and then the refusal to go into the school nurse’s room.  Not to mention afterwards, when she hates me for taking her!

Today concerned me, big time.  Not only did we have all the build up and the potential refusal but, because of my achey but very smiley jaws, there was the real chance that if I got hit, my progress could be set back massively.

So….off we set and had a chat on the way (mostly me) about how if she sat on my lap, it would be over really quickly, how wriggling could hurt me and (a big of a carrot) we might take a girlie trip to Claire’s Accessories and look at pink, blingy, girlie items!

I wasn’t sure if D was listening because she started whistling, a little whistle like a tiny old train engine trying to work out if it could do it, but whistle she did.  On the way to school, going in and into (after reluctance) to the nurse’s room.

And whistling carried on.  I joined in too and she sat on my lap and, yes there was a bit of wriggling, but not much and it was done!  Quite honestly, the best injection yet!

She’s gone off to class, smiling because she’s has tons and tons of praise and lots of cuddles, still whistling a bit but no doubt looking forward to our girlie trip.

She listened.  I wasn’t bashed.  I’m so, so proud of her!  Next month may be completely different but she took what I was saying into account and that is absolutely brilliant. (My jaw is mighty relieved too!!)

It would be lovely if they are, she did so well in showing empathy when she needed to.
