I Spy some progress – Tues 3rd March 2015
By Jeannette | March 3, 2015
I know D withholds and bottles her emotions and feelings up, she always has done.
It sometimes feels like I need a metaphorical tin opener.
But eventually she’ll let me know, sometimes it takes hours and occasionally days after the event. Times when I’m so glad that she’ll respond to gentle persuasion with a few cuddles, that she’s verbal, that her stilted speech is (unless she’s over anxious) a thing of the past.
This morning’s walk to school was an unhappy, stompy one. D was tearful and unresponsive, only letting me know what was wrong some 20 minutes into our walk, when we were about a minute away from school.
Then it was as if a switch flicked, she talked, she relaxed, she went upstairs to class comfortably, she turned – as she always does at the top of the stairs – and waved.
She wanted me to let Hubbie know what had been wrong – a misunderstanding before school – and sure enough, once she’d got down the stairs at the end of the day, she smiled at us and said to me “did you tell Dad?”. I said I did, they had a cuddle and all was good.
Whilst we wait for T, she’s started to really enjoy playing “I Spy” and giving us all realistic “I Spy’s” to guess, as opposed to, say, a mermaid (which she would do a year it so ago, when she didn’t fully understand the concept. She’ll even ask to have the answer whispered to her and Join in with the “no, no …. right answer!” banter.
It’s all progress and building on that turn-taking, that sharing, the anticipation of other’s answers.
The fact that she managed to say what was troubling her (eventually) this morning was a positive too.
I hope everyone’s day has gone well Jx

Reading along smiling until I came to that quote, this quote floored me. I have so many emotions at the moment as we go through this process but this is what I keep at the forefront of everything. Just seeing it in print opens up that floodgate of emotions! Day full of ups and downs today so I enjoyed joining in this evening and concentrating on what Dylan can do! Thank you 🙂 x

Love this progress, I’m so glad you were able to get to the bottom of the problem. I’m sure speech really helps, as does the timing ;0) x

It definitely does, along with tone and pitch of the questions x
