The third thing? Tues 7th Oct 2014

They – whoever “they” are say that things happen in three’s. It would certainly seem so for us this last couple of weeks, what with D’s tumble from her trike into the road, our waking up to a water leak yesterday and now today.

What’s happened today?

Well last night (I’m not sure if this is connected, online forums suggest it might be, but) I updated D’s iPad with the latest software update, all went through fine, it restarted, all was fine and then shut down at 85% battery.

This morning? Nothing. Totally unresponsive, which caused alarm (to put it mildly) from D. One soft reboot and one hard boot later and still nothing.

It was an anxious school run for D, her wondering if it could be fixed.

Unfortunately it seems not. The Genuis bar in Apple couldn’t start it and sent me to where it was purchased (John Lewis) with paperwork saying they’d had a go. It’s now been sent away, could be for up to a month with the most condescending remark from the shop assistant when I mentioned that this would cause “issues” at home and that D had autism of “well, I think there’s too much reliance at times on these things”.

Really? A child who relies on an iPad for communication would beg to differ. Fortunately this is not our situation but her iPad is a calming mechanism and a learning tool. Yes, both T and D rely on their iPads but in a world which is ever challenging for them, if they can relax with a bit of Minecraft …so be it.

A distinct lack of empathy or willingness to understand.

The one thing I am grateful of is that D is now old enough to understand timeframes and is willing to listen, even if she did run off crying afterwards, bless her.

One ray of light is that we are being lent one (no, not by the shop, that would be too much to hope for) and I’ll be able to collect it tomorrow.

It should put a smile on my girl’s face.

Coincidentally both the Apple person and the John Lewis person remarked on how effective D’s case was. The iPad had to be throughly inspected before it got sent away and there was nothing notable to write down, apart from “used”. So, that little pink case which I could only find in the U.S. was definitely worth the money.

Be nice to think it’s reunited with its contents soon.

And as for us, hopefully that’s now the “three things”, nothing else please for a while!

What a nightmare! Ethan took his iPad swimming (it survived) and then it
got smashed on the floor because someone got in his space. We had to
quickly order another one before it gave up. I looked into our insurance
but having to send it off for so long put me off the idea. I hope you
get it back soon x

Thanks, it does seem strange that the store wouldn’t take the Genuis person’s statement that it was no good.
Hopefully it/replacement will be with us soon, poor D has had a right few weeks! X

Oh no, sorry to hear this and to hear that the shop staff were so unsympathetic. Glad you’re able to borrow another for now and hope yours is fixed very soon
