Induction – Weds 25th June 2014

Today was induction day for T at the secondary school he’ll be going to in September. The school place we had to take all the way through the appeal process and won (yay!, yes I am still yay-ing).

It’s been a long few months since we had to make secondary school choices last October, to then find out we were unsuccessful in our first choice in March and thus began the appeal progress. A stressful time but made all the worthwhile by this a couple of weeks ago:

So, the Induction visit, a day for him to find out more about his new school and they about him.

The only indication that T had a few nerves this morning were that he was out in the garden, kicking a ball and doing tricks and flicks with it. Nerves were understandable, he was the only one attending from his school and he was aware how long and drawn out the process had been.

Hubbie took him along and he was met by older students chosen to assist and off he went. Our (not so) little man.

Fast forward a few hours and it was a smiley, chatty, cuddly T who returned. He’d had a really good day. Had some taster lessons, found out his House group and recognised some other pupils from his football playing against other teams.

And….this, which shows just how much it is the right setting for him:

For quite a while, T’s lunchboxes have come home half (or less) eaten. It’s been concerning us and we could only presume that the canteen-type environment at primary was a bit much for him. His sensory issues mean that he has more-or-less the same contents day in day out and he would always be ravenous at home.

But today…

He’d eaten nearly all of his packed lunch! There is a quieter area where year 7’s are allowed to go and that’s where he went and had his lunch. Further proof that we definitely made the right decision.

Next steps will be uniform and stationary buying and an Open Evening, again T was very positive about all this. Absolutely fantastic.

I’m not blinkered, I know there will be times when he doesn’t want to head off for that school bus, when things might all get a little bit too much but, to see him so relaxed and happy following today was just brilliant.

A Magic Moment for us and definitely a SSAmazingAchievement for T, could not be prouder Jx

We had an open evening at the secondary school my eldest will be going to in September a few weeks ago….In a couple of weeks she’s going for two days to see what a normal school day will be like…..She can’t wait. I’m dreading it. x

That’s brilliant, it was obviously worth all the hassle of the appeals process as you’ve got the right school for him. I hope all goes well when he starts. We start the applications rollercoaster with my younger son as soon as they go back to school.

Thanks Fiona, we all got such a good feeling about the school, so relieved that the panel listened and considered him.

This is fantastic, I’m so pleased it went so well. This will make the move for him so much easier. I’m so happy you got the school you wanted, I know it was a fight, can’t wait to hear how T gets on there.
