The Day Before.. Mon 31st March 2014

Tomorrow marks a new month, the start of Autism Awareness month. A month in which everyone connected with the (vast) autistic spectrum hopes that more awareness and understanding is spread.
This can only happen if people are willing to accept something that they can visibly see. Unlike physical disabilities, autism requires an empathy.
I was in town today, looking for D’s arts and crafts magazine for tomorrow. There is a small Sainsburys there, who’ve made a local autism charity their chosen charity for the year, which is fantastic. There are posters on the walls advertising this and, if I’m not at a self-service impersonal till, I’ll always mention T and D to the till operator.
There was a child in a SN buggy with his mum, he was getting very excited about the bits and pieces his mum was picking up, happy excited squeals. Others weren’t so impressed. He wasn’t doing anything wrong, just verbalising in the only way he knew how. His mum had her “tough skin” on and I recognised it, she was chatting away to her little man, ignoring everyone else.
More empathy, awareness and acceptance definitely needed.
There is a Horizon programme on autism tomorrow (1st April), details below:
It’s positive that it is in a prime time slot.
Tomorrow also brings D’s monthly injection (hence my search for her favourite magazine today), there is a difference this month, she’s having it done at school with the school nurse. I’ll be there with her. There have been a few anxieties this afternoon and evening. Luckily it will be first thing.
I shall have a few spaces for guest slots each evening for April and “This Is Autism”, I’m looking for parents/carers/individuals to write a couple of paragraphs on anything autism-related. Please email me at autismmumma at aol dot com if interested.
I hope everyone’s day has gone well, comments/RTs/shares as ever welcomed. Thanks for reading Jx
