The Hooded Claw – Fri 20th Dec 2013
By Jeannette | December 20, 2013
Those readers of a certain age might remember The Hooded Claw from cartoons. He was villainous, he was sneaky, but he never achieved his dastardly goal.
Other people might remember The Hooded Claw as a lyric from The Power Of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. In particular, the lines “I’ll protect you from the hooded claw, keep the vampires from your door”.
I sometimes think we have our own proverbial hooded claws (fears); for D, it’s a busy people-filled environment; for T, it’s the frustration of not always being challenged intellectually-wise, for me, it’s pushing myself forward and for Hubbie, it’s been today.
Christmas is coming, but for Hubbie’s family, it’s full of uncertainty. Full of worry. Full of timescales. The next 48-72 critical hours will determine so many things, when we should be looking forward, it has become a time to look back, to think “what if” and “why”.
It is difficult to deal with this uncertainty at the best of times but when there are autistic children within the mix there is the question of how much they are told. The bonus is that they are so reliant on their structure and routine, it keeps them on track and that is my focus for the next few days, ensuring their needs are met whilst offering cuddles, a shoulder and support to my Hubbie. He’s done it often enough for me, it’s time to return it tenfold.
So, to quote Frankie, as much as I can, I promise that:
“I’ll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
…
Dreams are like angels
They keep bad at bay-bad at bay
Love is the light
Scaring darkness away-yeah
I’m so in love with you
Purge the soul
Make love your goal
[1]-The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal
I’ll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
When the chips are down I’ll be around
With my undying, death-defying
Love for you”
We will see what tomorrow brings and I’m going to whack that Hooded Claw as much as I can.
Thanks for reading Jx
