The Earrings #SSAmazingAchievements

A couple of years ago, in the summer holidays, D decided she’d like her ears pierced.

It wasn’t something to be considered lightly as her stranger anxieties and sensory issues meant that we may not even get into the appointment. I also didn’t want her to be judged at all, but at the same time, remembered how I’d wanted my ears pierced and been told that a) I had to wait until I was 13 and b) pay for it myself. Two years after my initial piercing, I made second holes in both ears myself, with the aid of ice and a needle, I’ve since added a cartilage piercing and a belly button one…rebel!

So, I booked the appointment, tried to explain to D what would happen and bought some numbing cream. She was excited but apprehensive and it was done.

Then the "fun" started. D didn’t like having the backs on or the strange feel of the earrings and would pull them out at night. I blamed myself, why had I done this? eventually we got through the six weeks and it was return to school time.

D’s new teacher insisted that they were removed, not just for PE, but all the time (and against procedures set out). Which we compiled with and unfortunately over time the holes closed up.

This year, D decided that she’d like earrings in again. So, I put in earrings again, with the aid of numbing cream. Just as well because they had definitely closed up at the back.

School were asked if she could have them taped over for PE as the holes needed re-establishing. The (different) class teacher agreed and I supplied tape but the PE teacher forcibly removed them before the lesson, against D’s wishes. She wouldn’t accept that they needed re-establishing and it took a few notes and an eventual meeting before she agreed. The six weeks passed.

Anyway, one morning I forgot to take them out before PE. Doh! And a definite slapped wrist. I remembered and worried, would D be ok with someone else removing them? Would it hurt? Would they bleed?

I picked D up that afternoon and her ears were empty. Oh oh, thought I.

It turned out that D had removed them herself and wrapped them carefully in tissue because she hadn’t wanted anyone else to do it.

She hadn’t attempted that before. So proud of her that she foresaw a potential situation and quietly acted upon it.

She is definitely turning into quite a younger lady and looks lovely with her earrings in. In hindsight (isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing) maybe I should have waited until she was the age she is now but c’est la vie.
