“The Adventures of Red, Ben and Haunted Girl” – a comic by D
By Jeannette | October 6, 2013
Yesterday we had to go into town, there were lots of shoppers and immense sensory overload for D, what with the sights, sounds and smells.
We’d usually pop into a Costa or Starbucks for a bit of "sanctuary" but those were absolutely packed, with queues to the door.
Eventually we found a quiet (ish) corner in M&S cafe and D could settle – after a few self-regulating flaps – and do some more work on her latest comic (this in itself was a Magic Moment).
Her latest story has been devised by her because "it’s Halloween month", she likes looking at all the glittery spooky stuff in the shops but doesn’t like the strangers knocking on the door on October 31st.
Her story is great and unusually for D, it has a few negative connotations but these are within the story, normally her pictures are very positive.
(Because D finds writing challenging, I’ve written most of it, but there are occasions where she has written. Where she hasn’t, she’s dictated what I should write in)
Here it is:
The Adventures of Red, Ben and Haunted Girl":
Once upon a time, in a restaurant far from you:
There was a lady named Red and a man named Ben:
They dined out in a restaurant every Saturday afternoon:
But none of them noticed that they were being watched…
It was an evil super-villain ghost named "Haunted Girl":
One red-haired girl noticed the villain flying into the restaurant and warned everyone:
Everyone grabbed their meals as takeaways and ran for their lives:
Haunted Girl took Ben away from Red:
Red followed the flying ghost, she went to a haunted castle:
Inside Ben was behind bars and scared!
Red grabbed the key…and unlocked the cage, then she grabbed a dibber:
And…
She pressed it into the ghost’s heart and that was the end of Haunted Girl:
And so Red and Ben got married.
The End.
I love how she’s used her imagination, something that autistic children are perceived to be lacking and that there is a structure to her story.
Really looking forward to the next one!

This is brilliant! I love that she’s constructed an entire comic story (a fun one, too), and that she works on it so calm herself. A truly magic moment 🙂

I love these, I hope she keeps it up. It made me laugh when she said they took their food as take aways. I understand your concerns for the end of the story but it is in context so that is a positive. A fantastic imagination.
