Sunday 21st October – Cinderella and Celebs mag

I’m going to start tonight’s blog by referencing an article in today’s Sunday Mirror “Celebs on Sunday” magazine.

Unfortunately there isn’t an online link at present but it is well worth a read. It highlights the fact that growing numbers of women and girls are being diagnosed with Aspergers and Autism and speaks to Sophie Walker (click on the link to be taken to her blog or follow her on twitter @SophieRunning) who has an aspergers daughter, Grace.

Our day:
A blip aside, D has had a really good weekend. T, D and I went into town today, they were both eager to start collecting the Happy Meal Madagascar 3 toys and fortunately it wasn’t too busy in MaccyD.

The free toy was Marty (the zebra) which you fire out of a cannon, you can imagine that, as children got these out of their meals, these were being fired everywhere! I had the idea that maybe (!) the zebras should be aimed at the boxes, amazingly both agreed and this was carried on once we got home too:

One of the reasons for being in town was to satisfy D’s current Cinderella obsession, where this has stemmed from I don’t know, but it’s nice to see my girl being a little bit girlie (she never was before). She chose some little Disney Princesses whilst T chose a Captain Underpants book (princesses arranged by D, all looking in completely different directions):

Cinderella-need satisfied, we popped along to Krispy Kreme (nom nom) where T and D enjoyed the Captain Underpants song , have a peek, it’s very silly!

All went really well until we got back and D had to write her “what I have done this weekend” homework. She finds hand-writing very challenging and it is one of the reasons she is negative about school on Monday because she knows she has to write her “news”. I wrote down three sentences for her to copy out and what should have been done in a flash took a good half hour. She was very upset doing the writing and frequently complaining it was “hard work”. The OT at school had previously picked up on the fact that they had “come as far as they could with her handwriting” and I thought they had agreed to focus on keyboard skills instead so I’m going to request that she do her news on the computer, the thought of her not looking forward to Sunday afternoons because of this and the anxiety and (potential) meltdowns do not appeal.

(this did not stop her previous teacher from writing all over her work, criticising that she was mixing lower and upper case! When I saw that I thought talk about encouragement – not! – I know how challenging D finds handwriting, I treasure her little notes and cards)

So, little blip aside, we’ve had a really good weekend. Proud of both T and D in town today, one more week until half term for both.
