An Olympic Adventure – Tues 5th July 2016

By | July 5, 2016

Well, what a day! A long day, but what a great one!

Regular readers of my blog will remember that two months ago D participated in a Pantathlon swimming event at Stoke Mandeville, the school team won the regional heat and booked their place to the Olympic Pool in Stratford for the final.  Exciting stuff!

Today we had a road trip to the final and it’s been brilliant.

It was a two hour journey to the pool and, bless them, the children were off the school bus, straight into changing areas and onto the pool side to get started as the other schools were geographically closer and ready and waiting.

D had had a few worries about today and – oh, isn’t the Internet wonderful ?!? – she googled the pool size before we set off this morning as she was worried, the result made her worry more, but luckily the competition took place in the smaller pool below the diving area.

D took part in the 1 X width freestyle and the Treasure Races and, when not participating, was clapping at her competing team mates – which was lovely to see.

Overall, their team came third, which is brilliant when you consider the journey and anxieties (and the fact that some of the other teams were far broader and stronger), we’re extremely proud of all of the children.

Another road trip home, this time with D as she had the option of going with us or the school bus, home and some much needed R&R for our water baby.

A free tshirt from today as the schools had colours to represent their teams and that wonderful bronze medal, she was also given a swimming hat.  These will act as great conversation prompts in the future and what fantastic visuals reminders of today.

The medals were presented by Liz Johnson, Paralympic champion and Panathlon Ambassador.  According to the programme, she was in the water today and we also missed seeing Tom Daley prior to arriving, hey ho.

Today was a perfect example of “can do”. Yes, there were worries and anxieties but, thanks to the school’s very patient PE staff, who can see and harness potential and the brilliant organisation of the event by Panathlon, it all went very well.

Just found this picture of our D on the website, says it all really, doesn’t it?

What a fantastic experience! She must feel so proud of herself and you must feel so proud of her. It’s great that the anxieties were kept at bay and she supported her team mates 🙂
