Hooked – Tues 2nd Feb 2016

By | February 2, 2016

It’s not that often these days I can say I tried something new, but today I have.

It’s something that I hope will relax me just as much as knitting does, but probably even more so as it’s portable.

Crochet! I’d first had a try at last year’s BritMums Live, got into a pickle with it and came away having “mastered” wriggly worms (aka chain stitch) and that was it.

So I carried on knitting, made a sofa throw for us and one for my father-in-law, Christmas stockings, hearts, clothes for D’s Bunny, fingerless mittens etc and started my Sky Blanket – all the while feeling annoyed with myself that I couldn’t seem to crochet, especially as I had been seeing such lovely designs and patterns around.

Until today.  I went along to a crochet group and this was the result after the two hour session:

And this is a bit later on:

I’m now on my sixth colour!  I didn’t imagine progress this quickly.  I’m left handed and learning crochet as a right-handed person which has caused a few “what/where/how can my digits stay in position?” but am really pleased.

Obviously these only use a couple of stitches, if you asked me how to crochet in a row, I’d have no idea.  Maybe I’ll learn that next week but knowing that I can and will do this has meant that I have another relaxation/calming tool under my wing because, let’s face it, anything that takes my mind off autism/SN matters for a while is a bonus.

T, D and Hubbie thought it was pretty cool too.  For me, this is my #SSAmazingAchievement Jx

Thanks, I hope so. I love knitting but crochet seems a lot more toy/detail friendly 🙂

Oh that’s lovely! I can crochet a very basic stitch, but make nothing of any value. I think a course would be a good idea for me too! It is very relaxing once you get into it!

Thanks, it’s a group in our local library, which I found out about by chance. Looking forward to learning another stitch next week, in the meantime this will get bigger! 🙂

That’s brilliant. I tried it at Britmums too, but the lady got in a pickle with me as I’m so left handed so it all went pear shaped. Would love to try again at some point.Look forward to seeing yours grow #SSAA

Lovely. I really enjoy crochet too. Very relaxing. It is lovely to see your leisure time become a tangible thing that takes shape in front of you 🙂 x

I remember crochet when I was a child and loved it because progress is quicker, and you’ve proved me right!! It’s great that you can find some downtime to totally relax – and you’ll come away with something at the end of it! Win Win in my book!

They’re lovely! I used to crochet – my Granny taught me. I can’t remember how now but keep saying I want to pick it up again! I was never much of a knitter, though I could do it, but I always liked crochet. #SSAmazingAchievements

That’s amazing, I wouldn’t know where to start. I wonder if I should get my mum into this, she has gone through a mad knitting stage for the past two years.

Thanks for linking up with Small Steps Amazing Achievements :0)
