Lucky – Tues 4th Nov 2014

By | November 4, 2014

We had D’s statement review meeting today, full of praise and updates on how far she’s come in the smaller class size/higher staff ratio that her SN school offers. It’s the right environment for her.

But, like last year, I’m come away with a worry (and not just because I’m not feeling 100%, or even 50%), the worry that at one of these future meetings we will be told that the school has taken her as far as they can and she has to return to mainstream.

It’s happened before, with another pupil, against his mum’s wishes.

There was talk today of this over-anxious little 5 year old (D) who found the mainstream environment too challenging to learn in, who couldn’t participate in classroom lessons, assemblies or sometimes even go for lunch in the noisy, busy dinner hall.

We were told today that we were “lucky” because if D came to them today asking for a place, she wouldn’t get in, not with how much she’s improved. BUT she’s only improved because she is comfortable and happy in that environment, I know that, readers of my blogs will know that, her teacher knows that, I hope some faceless panel doesn’t decide otherwise, who sees D as a commodity, a budgetary figure to move around.

Yes, we are “lucky” but it shouldn’t be at a cost to D’s happiness.

And T turned 12 today, our little man is growing up fast. He hasn’t wanted to do cake, candles and the whole shebang tonight so we will tomorrow, it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

Also his biscuit castle got to school in one piece and then returned home in one piece too, I had secretly hoped that the staff might take a (ahem) liking to it, hey ho.

I hope everyone’s day has gone well Jx
