My word for the week and #R2BC

By | October 9, 2014

Phew! It’s nearly Friday. I am going to be glad to see the back of this week, it has been a week of unexpected events and, whilst that could be my word, it’s not.

My word (or words on this occasion) is (are):

I had things planned for this week, I was going to get some reviews up, some lists written and just generally aiming to feel a bit organised, especially with (sssh) Christmas less than three months away.

But no, the fickle finger of fate ensured that I didn’t and I’ll explain why and try and add in some positives too.

1. Water, water everywhere…

We woke up on Monday to a water leak, luckily a containable one but still a leak. It meant that the bathroom basin was out of action before school, which caused a few issues, with D especially not wanting to use alternatives.

We were classed as a priority 2 and, despite assurances that I’d receive updates on when someone would be arriving, I was left waiting until someone actually knocked. Any plans cancelled.

Positive and R2BC: it’s all done, much to D’s relief. I think we’ve only used our home cover plan three times since taking it out but it’s worth it.

2. Much missed..

The next morning (Tuesday) brought with it the fact that D’s I pad mini broke. It refused to turn on and after online advice we established that a trip to the Apple Store was needed to see if their Genius bar could do anything.

For the second day running, I dropped an anxious D off at school.

My day was spent waiting for a cancellation in the Apple Store, being told that the I pad was not fixable, then being given paperwork and heading to where it was bought, to wait again, to be told that it needed to be sent away. Even though I had paperwork from Apple, even though it had extended warranty.

Any comments I made about timing and that this will cause issues at home were met with a “people can become too reliant on these things”. Not the most helpful sales assistant in the world.

And off it’s gone. Could be a month before we know if it’s fixable (it’s not). A day spent queuing and waiting.

Normally I love popping into the Apple Store, I take a look at those lovely iMacs and imagine having one at home (ooh look, something snorting has just flown past the window) but because I knew that it wasn’t good news about something that D relies on, I didn’t enjoy it.

Positive and R2BC: We have luckily been lent something to tide D over. She’s missing hers and all her apps, but it’s helping.

3. A Two Ronnies moment

I didn’t get on with varifocals so they went back and two replacement pairs of glasses were ordered.

Top pair for computer work, lower pair for distance.

I’ve gone from rimless to very distinctive and quite funky frames and I love them, especially the lower ones.

It took a while for them to arrive but worth the wait. Apparently I’m a bit reminiscent of Melanie Griffith in Working Girl in them, according to Hubbie. Bless him!

4. A medal

We knew when T joined his secondary school that it was very community-focused. Which is a positive. It also means that there are opportunities to take part in events within the school day.

T came home yesterday saying that his PE lesson today would be a fun-run, he didn’t expect to come home with this today, something else for his medal collection:

He does like his medals and for someone who spends a lot (understatement) of a Saturday running around after a football, a fun run was a nice bit of exercise for him.

It’s definitely been a week of unexpectedness, of queuing, of tears (for D) and of things feeling a bit out of my control, but reading about what else is going on around the world, I’m just glad we’re healthy (apart from niggly silly coughs) and all together (major R2BC) there.

What a shame about the iPad Mini and so frustrating. I do hope you can get a solution soon. And well done T-medals are always something to celebrate aren’t they 🙂
