Homework – Sun 7th Sept 2014
By Jeannette | September 7, 2014
With T’s commencement at secondary school last week, it’s brought an increase in homework. This is something we had prepared him for, but I guess there is nothing like being giving a fantastic “grown up” planner and then seeing it being filled with homework.
Because T’s Saturdays are taken up with football-related activities, it’s always been Sunday morning equals homework. I know it would be better if it was out of the way on the day set, but he’s always done any on Sunday and I’m very conscious of just how much change he’s dealing with at the moment, coupled with his much earlier start to catch his school bus and the fact he just needs to wind down after a longer day. We’ll obviously address this as the amount increases as he goes through school.
So, down to it. A lot of it was fairly simple, at this early stage I guess it’s all about gauging the new year 7’s abilities so that they can be placed into sets in a few weeks. Sequencing, writing down what he knew about certain topics and a bit of personalising of a book (in the picture above).
T isn’t a “crafter”, that’s more D’s hobby – give her scissors, material/paper to cut and glue and she’s very happy, she’ll craft all manner of intricate little pieces – but T’s more of a physical activity chappie, so there were protests and trepidation.
We got organised with the Argos catalogue and I pre-ripped out loads of pages.
The choosing was then down to T and the book to be covered was for Design Technology, which tbh pretty much covers anything, doesn’t it, everything having originated as an idea, got designed and manufactured.
He enjoyed looking at the pages, deciding which to include and then the sticking onto the cover. Which I think surprised him and it was really nice to just have that T:me time, we don’t get very much of that.
And the above is the back, loads of pictures and plenty of discussion prompts.
Guess what? I even got a “thanks Mum” when he’d finished! That’s my Magic Moment, always nice to be appreciated, I don’t always feel that I am.
D had a bit of homework too, some “News” which she grumbled and mumbled about (writing is not her strong point) but it’s done (and there can’t be many children going in with News that their guinea pigs escaped under the trampoline, as ours did today!).

I presume you got them back safely? One of ours is a jumper so we are always wary when we move him to the run. Been too cold today though, lessens the escape risk.
Well done T for being so mature about the new homework. Being out of your comfort zone is never easy but it sounds like he is really making the effort 🙂

Yes, they scuttled back chirping away, they’re very good at coming when called but do like to scurry off for grass if they get a chance.
So pleased with how T is coping with all the change x

The excitement of homework has definitely worn off (!) but he’s still enthusiastic which is a bonus 🙂
