A Result and A Relief #R2BC #MagicMoments #WhatsTheStory

Well, what an absolute rolled-coaster of a week this is turning out to be!

I have some pretty mega Reasons To Be Cheerful this week, which are also pretty Magical Moments too.

Off we go:

1. Oh My Goodness! Regular blog readers will know that we appealed against the secondary school place we were given for T as we felt our first choice was more suitable for him, a place where – given the chance – he would flourish.

He’s a very clever little man, with a high functioning autistic “label” and a team player. We felt we owed it to him to pursue this, although it felt very stressful as he’s Unstatemented and therefore we were without assistance from SEN departments.

Our appeal meeting was on Monday (click here for details) and it was very obvious at the outset that there weren’t the facilities or funding to open up an additional class so we went into our (nerve-racking) individual meeting with the attitude of “thank you for seeing us and for this chance to tell you about our son”, rather than “well, this is a waste of time, you’ve no spaces”.

We finished the meeting, got told we’d receive an email in 9 days (and then a letter), prepared ourselves for a “No” but hoped for a little bit of good luck.

This morning, at about 2am, I checked my emails and found this:

We’ve got a place!! Happy tears in the small hours and a tired Hubby cos i just had to wake him up. Still can’t believe it. So relieved, so happy, so grateful that the panel looked beyond the diagnosis in the CAMHS report and listened to us and were willing to hear what a great little man he is. Wow, just wow!!

2. T played in a school football tournament yesterday and the team won!

Pretty impressively too, as yesterday’s blog details. So extremely proud of him.

3. It feels like the focus has all been on T this week, but D and I had a lovely girlie shopping trip at the weekend, she’s very pleased about her brother’s school place too.

Still can’t believe our appeal was successful! Jx

Oh my God. I am so pleased for you and T. I can’t believe it. You must be on cloud nine. I know from experience how the right school place helps our children flourish. Go T and well done you and your hubby.

Thank you, I still won’t believe it fully until we get some sort of letter but over the moon. It’s such a great setting for him 🙂

Wow – such fab news!!! Similar thing happened with J when he wanted to go back to school – there were no places and we were told the school had already looked at the possibility of making a new place but absolutely could not do that. County panel echoed that and said there were no places. Then amazingly when it went to the complex case panel, they did manage to offer him a place. We were in total shock but it so is the right place for him. Well done on the football and shopping too! xxx

Fantastic news about the secondary school place, that’s really good to hear that it is possible to get what you want! Schools have the final say in Ireland, so I ended up with only one offer, and it was that or home educating, which I may still do…

Oh gosh, good luck. I was prepared to home school D if we couldn’t get her into
SN so know exactly where you’re at.

Lovely end to what must have been a tense week. So hard when they have needs but not statemented, I have one in this category too, well done you for appealing and getting the result you wanted.
