Happy Mothers Day – Sun 30th March 2014
By Jeannette | March 30, 2014
Today was Mothers Day, a day that D has been excited about for weeks, it’s been really lovely to see.
There were years of her not recognising her own birthday, Christmas or any other events, so to see her infectious excitement has been wonderful.
A few weeks ago, whilst we were waiting for the nurse to call her in for an injection, we were looking through an arts and crafts magazine for girls. Many of the crafts ideas where designed for Mothers Day – a card, paper flowers, little “I promise..” tokens and an idea for breakfast for a mum.
D took all of this to heart and little secret packages have been gathering in her room.
The first thing she did this morning, after giving me a cuddle was this:
As the magazine suggested, heart-shaped toast. Prepared by her with Hubbie’s help. She was so proud of herself (and it was yummy too).
Tomorrow is the deadline for getting our secondary school place appeal in for T. We took a trip out to hand-deliver the paperwork and T looked so visibly comfortable walking around (what we hope will be his secondary) school grounds. He was definitely much calmer and chattier once it had been dropped off too. Further proof that we’re doing the right thing, even thought we won’t know for sure until mid-June whether he has a place or not. Fingers crossed.
A few more days until the Easter holidays and one day until Autism Awareness month.
If you’d like to write something for a nightly feature throughout April, please see below and let me know. There are already some great contributions scheduled but room for more:
This Is Autism:
I’m looking for contributions from parents/carers/individuals within the autistic spectrum:
It doesn’t have to be a full blown post, it could be:
What they enjoy doing ie. their favourite toy or pastime, or
How they find school, or
Where their favourite place is, or
How you felt on receiving (or not) a diagnosis, or
A rant about anything that could be better, or
Hopes/fears for the future, or
Anything about life under the vast spectrum.
Pictures would be great with anonymity preserved, with age and initial.
If anyone is interested in joining in with this daily feature, please let me know either by leaving a comment or tweeting me.
Any stories (long or short) and pictures can be emailed (autismmumma at aol dot com) to me and I’ll let you know when it will be included.
Thanks Jeannette

Aww the Mother’s Day story is really lovely.
Eek your appeal deadline was early – we have until after Easter – good job as the help from the school isn’t forthcoming. Best of luck.
Lovely idea for posts too btw.

I LOVE the mothers day toast! I will have to drop hints for next year. Even though we are crazy busy at the moment something inside me is saying I should offer to write something for Autism month after hearing just this evening about several children really struggling with similar issues to what J had at school due to lack of awareness and understanding by schools / teachers. Will email you. x
